Young Souls by Dean Chalkley at Hotel Pelirocco
The Hotel Pelirocco will be exhibiting ‘Young Souls’ by Dean Chalkley, an exhibition of photographs exploring the culture of Northern Soul from January 19th – March 29th
Northern Soul is a music phenomenon that kicked off in the late sixties in the northern cities of England. It was, arguably the birth of the original rave scene – people would dance athletically all night long to rare and fast paced seven-inch soul records from America. Since then the movement has dispersed throughout the country, and a tight-knit fan base of dedicated followers has endured.
The Young Souls project arose when Dean was invited to submit a film and photographic Project for a 125 Magazine issue based around an interpretation of ‘Religion’. He explains ‘Immediately the phase “Keep the faith” came into my head, music never being far from my mind, I thought that this would be a great opportunity to explore and present a subject that is close to my heart. I didn’t want to just recreate the past, but I did aim to produce timeless works that illustrate the culture as never before.’
The Exhibition at Hotel Pelirocco will launch on January 19th with a night of Northern Soul Music, and early bird free treats kindly provided by Courvoisier.
